Kirk Hammett of Metallica to Release First Solo EP

Portals will be Kirk Hammett of Metallica’s first solo venture, and is set to be released on April 23, 2022.

The four-song instrumental EP will be available on digital platforms, CD, and also as a Record Store Day Exclusive ocean blue vinyl which will include a download card. 

The EP was recorded in a number of locations ranging from Los Angeles to Paris to Oahu, and represents both musical and metaphysical journeys.
 
“This music was created with what I describe as an Audio-Cinematic approach. They’re soundtracks to the movies in your mind,” said Kirk Hammett.

The EP was produced by Kirk. The songs “Maiden and the Monster” and “The Jinn” are on side A. Side B includes the songs “High Plains Drifter” and “The Incantation” both of which were co-written with Edwin Outwater. Edwin also plays the keyboards and leads the orchestral players from the LA Philharmonic on the EP. Kirk has previously collaborated with Edwin on Me
 
Produced by Kirk, Portals is comprised of the songs Maiden and the Monster and The Jinn on side A, followed by High Plains Drifter and The Incantation on side B (both co-written with Edwin Outwater, who contributes keyboards and leads the orchestral players from the LA Philharmonic on Portals — and with whom Kirk had previously collaborated on Metallica’s S&M2 concerts and releases). Other familiar names amongst the Portals players include drummers Jon Theodore and Abraham Laboriel, Greg Fidelman on bass, Emmy-winning arranger Blake Neely, and Bob Rock.
