Chicago-based artist and musician Lydia Cash was kind enough to come and talk to us about writing, painting, performing, and, of course, her upcoming album.
A native of Leeds, Alabama, Lydia Cash is the definition of a true creative. If she doesn’t have a brush in her hand, creating art on a canvas, it’s likely that that same hand is gripping the neck of a guitar as she creates or performs her music. The last time we spoke to Lydia was in 2018. At that time, she was well on the path to making the production and sale of her artwork a sustainable business whilst also working on her first EP. The result of her hard work was Past Lives, a largely electronic record, a large chunk of which was written whilst she was traveling in Europe.
Since then, whilst Lydia’s musical style has evolved, moving more into the country sphere, some things have remained the same: that stunning voice; a great ear for melody/hooks, and brutally honest, soul-bearing lyrics. When you put all that together in a songwriter, you get something pretty special. Don’t take our word for it – go and listen to her discography, Dream Girl, Indigo, and Blush, and we’re sure you’ll agree that Lydia is indeed a pretty special artist!
This was a really enjoyable chat, during which we covered a ton of ground including Lydia’s songwriting process, playing live, balancing her art and music careers, as well as some general catch-up since the last time we talked. She was also kind enough to play us a couple of new songs from her upcoming album which should be dropping in the next couple of months!
