Twiddle at Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater in Vail, CO

The Colorado Rocky Mountains for a backdrop, playing through a beautiful sunset, and a special guest make for a memorable show.

On paper, playing at the base of one of the largest ski areas in the US, during one of their larger sports and arts festivals, doesn’t sound like an intimate experience. Anyone attending though quickly realized that Twiddle was able to make it feel like a small community show.

“This is my 10th anniversary of coming to their shows,” “I have seen them 64 times,” and “We’re traveling across the state to see them tomorrow” are just some of the various comments said by fans who had the opportunity to see the band play multiple times in one day. Starting their day at noon, Twiddle had a short free set at one of the smaller stages of the event. Called the Jam in the Van stage, the band played for a smaller crowd near the athlete’s lounge area. This gave longtime fans the ability to interact with potential new fans and get them interested in attending the show later that night.

The day progressed, the sun started to go down, a few light raindrops to cool down the heat, a move across town to the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater, and it was time for the main performance. Opening the show was Mihali Savoulidis, who is the lead singer of Twiddle. Playing as Mihali and joined by G.Love the pair came out to get the crowd ready with familiar favorites as well as one of G. Love’s most recent singles, “Laughing in the Sunshine” from his upcoming album, Philadelphia Mississippi. That album is due out in two weeks, on June 24. The two spoke of the first time they met like old friends just playing for themselves and chatting before playing a mashup of well-known cover songs including “Casey Jones,” “Glycerine,” “No Woman, No Cry,” “Wagon Wheel,” and “One Day.”

After the opening set was over, it was time for Mihali to walk onto the stage for a third time in one day, with the rest of Twiddle following. This made the crowd really fill into the front and get ready to hang out with each other for a fun night. Playing an impressive set of just over two hours that started while the sun was still up, through the full sunset behind the crowd and into the darkness of the night. The crowd got more and more into it as the venue got darker with some fans dancing with glow sticks in the back, while others chose to be as close to the stage as possible to dance along. The mountains are always a perfect place for the reggae, funk, and rock mix that a great jam band such as Twiddle can effortlessly execute.

Bringing out G. Love again for another collaboration put the final emphasis on the show really just feeling like a bunch of friends at a backyard party playing music for fun. All in all, Twiddle played an amazing show with the perfect summertime mountain vibe, and going by the last line of their last song of the night, “When it rains it pours,” they just want you to “smile as you walk by, thinking about the day.”
