TV Girl at Emo’s in Austin, TX

The indie-pop band, TV Girl made their way from SoCal to bring down the house at Emo’s in Austin, Texas.

The San Diego, California-based group, known for their hypnotic pop and frequent samples from obscure older music, brought their amazing talent to the concert-goers of Austin. TV Girl is touring their latest release, Grapes Upon the Vine. This album was released in June of 2023 and is their fourth studio album, which is their first solo album release in five years. The album changes direction from their previous work, which was well-received by fans at the show. One track features a sample from a gospel song, which caught fans off-guard.

TV Girl is composed of three members, Brad Petering (vocals), Jason Wyman (drums), and Wyatt Harmon (keys). In addition to the original members and completing The TV Girl Traveling All-Star Band were three insanely skilled women.

Supporting TV Girl on the first third of The TV Girl Traveling All-Star Band Tour is Neggy Gemmy, formerly known as Negative Gemini. Neggy Gemmy grew up moving from town to town in the south and it wasn’t until 2014 that she moved to Brooklyn, NY. In Brooklyn, Neggy Gemmy experimented with electronic and pop, both of which heavily influence her work today. In 2018, she moved to Los Angeles, and in return her style and music shaped into what newer fans would be most familiar with now. She is also known to program the lighting at her shows and if that isn’t impressive, we don’t know what is.

TV Girl started at about 9 PM and opened with the track “I’ll Be Faithful” from their newest album. They then followed with three tracks from their first LP, French Exit. Those three songs that excited fans were “Pantyhose,” “Hate Yourself,” and “Louise.” Before continuing the set, Brad told the fans he knew a lot of people weren’t keen on their new album because it was very different from their previous work. He joked that TV Girl’s fans maybe needed a little bit of spiritual guidance because the album is heavily influenced by gospel music. They then proceeded to play three songs back-to-back from that album which the crowd did love.

As the band began to close their set, fans still kept their energy levels up and remained spirited for the conclusion of the show. Before performing their encore, the band told the audience that “Heaven Is A Bedroom” would be their last song of the night. After they left the stage for about five minutes, they returned and joked, “You know we couldn’t leave without performing your favorite song.” They sang “Big Black Void” from Grapes Upon the Vine and followed it with their most streamed song, “Lover’s Rock.” Another amazing song from French Exit that gained traction by going viral on TikTok. The band ultimately closed the set with “It Evaporates” from their 2012 EP The Wild, the Innocent, the TV Shuffle.

The amazingly talented band, TV Girl is not one to miss. This is only their second show on this leg of the tour, so be sure to make an appearance next time they are in a city nearby. You won’t be disappointed.
