While on their Part Time Believer Tour, The Strumbellas visited Austin’s Historic Scoot Inn for a night filled with fun and music.
This indie-rock band didn’t leave town without making an amazing impression on the Austin crowd. The Strumbellas’ music has also been described as alternative country or, even, gothic folk. The band was formed in Canada in 2008. Over the past decade, the band has been putting out amazing music, album after album. Last year, The Strumbellas released their first new single in two years, “Hold Me.” In 2015, they released their hit single, “Spirits.” Which would later be released with the rest of their third studio album, Hope, the next year. Today, the band is made up of Dave Ritter (keys), Jon Hembrey (guitar), Isabel Ritchie (violin), Darryl James (bass), Miles Gibson (drums), and Jimmy Chauveau (vocals). In February, they released their latest album, Part Time Believer.
Before the sun had set, openers Certainly So took to the stage. The band is composed of four members, Tanner Gray (guitar), Chase Porter (bass), Colby Wilson (guitar), and Zach Corder (drums). Touring with them on keys is Diego Urias. Certainly So is new to the scene and released their first album in 2021, Future Self Only Dreams. The same day of the show, they released an EP with three new songs, of which they sang “1422.” They also played “The Way You Say No” and “Foreign Tiles.” At the end of the show, they expressed how thankful they were to The Strumbellas and to everyone that came early to see them.
A little after 9:00 pm, the six band members of The Strumbellas made their grand entrance. The smoke and lights built the suspense for their epic intro. They opened their set with “Running Scared (Desert Song),” from their 2019 album release, Rattlesnake. During “Hold Me,” Chauveau put down his guitar to sing. For the next song, “Greatest Enemy,” he stepped down into the pit to stand at the barricade so he could sing with his fans. They played a few songs from their newest album Part Time Believer, such as “Steal My Soul” and “Running Out of Time.” Mid-set, Chauveau explained to the crowd that at every show they have been putting a box at the merchandise stand and asking the audience to write down and put their reasons to believe in life. At this time, they took a second to read a few reasons put in the box from past shows. One piece of paper was from a couple who had been married for 24 years and the love they shared was their reason to keep believing. After the short break, they picked back up with a few older songs like “I Just Had a Baby” and “Sailing.” Before taking an acoustic break, they performed “Shovels & Dirt” from their album Hope. Unexpectedly, they performed a cover of The Killers’ “All These Things That I’ve Done.” As they came to the end of their set, Ritchie told the crowd they don’t do encores anymore so the last song would really be their last. They closed their set with their classic, “Spirits,” which went as expected, everyone screaming every word.
