The Main Squeeze packed out The Rebel Lounge in Phoenix for a fun night of funk, soul, R&B, and good old rock n roll.
As the crowd filed into The Rebel Lounge, ready to kick off their weekend with purpose, the anticipation could be felt. Audience members could be heard chatting to new acquaintances, asking how many times they’d seen The Main Squeeze before and assuring newcomers that they were in for one hell of a show. And they weren’t wrong. From the moment they took to the stage, they brought the funk, the soul, and a good dose of groove to The Rebel Lounge. All of your weekday stresses melted away as Corey Frye’s voice swept across the audience.
Speaking of Corey, talk about a frontman. Not only did his presence have the crowd captivated, but that voice! If ever a voice sounded like pure butter, that was it. You don’t need a spa day. Just get yourself along to see The Main Squeeze. It’s everything you need for your mind, body, and soul.
While the effect of their sound was relaxing and chilled, their performance was tight and dialed in. Notable shout-out must also go to Maximillian Newman whose guitar skills were outstanding, to say the least. Reuben Gingrich on drums and Rob Skywalker on bass provided a strong rhythm section, with Ben Silverstein adding extra flourishes on the keys.
Their set was made up of something old and new. They kicked off the set with “Sweat” from their 2017 album Without A Sound, before following up with “Sunday Morning” from their latest release To Be Determined. Throughout the set, the audience danced, swayed, and got their groove on, thoroughly enjoying themselves as much as the band appeared to be. The smiles from the band were reciprocated throughout the room.
It was refreshing to get to experience a show like this. There aren’t enough bands performing this kind of music these days. They are definitely in the minority. If you want to get your funk on and see a band who knows how to bring, get yourself along to catch them on this tour. They have a number of dates scheduled around the country, so do yourself a favor and go check them out.
This show was covered as part of our fundraising trip for National Independent Venue Foundation and Musicians On Call. We are traveling across the country and stopping at independently-owned music venues to cover a show and to chat with their owners about the importance of independent music venues within the music industry. Austin was our tenth stop of the trip and we were lucky enough to make a stop at independently owned Tumbleroot Brewery and Distillery on our travels. You can read more about this fundraising trip here. If you would like to donate to NIVF, you can do so here, and if you would like to donate to Musicians On Call, you can do so here. All proceeds go directly to your chosen organization.
