The Birmingham-born band, The Brook & The Bluff kicked off the second show of their 2023 spring tour in Little Rock, Arkansas.
The now Nashville-based group, The Brook & The Bluff didn’t have to travel far for their show at The Rev Room. The original quartet is comprised of Joseph Settine (vocals), John Canada (drums/vocals), Alec Bolton (guitar), and Fred Lankford (bass). In addition, on the keys is the insanely talented Kevin Canada. The band formed while the four were in college and in 2019 they released their first full-length album, First Place. Their last album was released in 2021 but the band did announce that they were working on some new music that hopefully will be here soon.
Opening for the band is folk-rock singer/songwriter, Savannah Conley. Savannah has been making and putting out music since 2017. She has opened for many well-known names, such as Willie Nelson and Brandi Carlile. At 8:00 pm, Conley and the rest of her band stepped onto the stage as Harry Styles’ “As It Was” was playing. Conley told the crowd that her job was to remind the audience what it felt like to be sad or angry so that when The Brook & The Bluff came out, you would remember what it’s like to be happy again. Mid-set, she taught the crowd the refrain of one of her songs, “Always Gonna Happen.” During the bridge, she cued them in, and even fans who didn’t know the song enthusiastically sang along. Conley’s first album is to be released on May 12th.
The Brook & The Bluff started their set with a piano solo from Kevin which transitioned into “Little Sheets” from Yard Sale. They then played a few more songs before performing a cover of Bobby Caldwell’s “What You Won’t Do For Love.” At about this time, Settine told the crowd that they had been working on new music for quite a while now. It was just a matter of getting it all together into an album. They played an unreleased song, “Long Limbs,” which hopefully we’ll be able to listen to soon. Halfway through the set, they pulled out a vintage-looking large condenser microphone. At the mic, Settine, Canada, Bolton, and Lankford performed two acoustic songs. The first being their original “Petals on the Floor” and the second a cover of “Don’t Worry Baby,” by The Beach Boys. With only five songs left to go, they told the crowd that they weren’t going to do an encore but instead hang by the merch booth to meet and talk to everyone. They played their single “Doobie Bronson” and then “Masks” which transitioned into a cover of “All These Things I Have Done” by The Killers. Ultimately, they closed the set with “Everything Is Just a Mess” from their album, First Place.
The Brook & The Bluff have tour dates scheduled throughout the summer so be sure to check them out if they roll into your town. Their groovy and dynamic performance is one to add to any bucket list.
