Hunny and Between You & Me have joined forces with State Champs to make this tour even more memorable.
Melbourne, Australia’s Between You & Me jumped right into it with a fan favorite “Butterflies” and the crowd’s energy went from anxious anticipation to wildly excited. The setlist consisted of songs from their sophomore record, Armageddon, and their first album, Everything is Temporary. This gave all the fans something to look forward to with a mix of why they started listening to them to begin with and why they still do. Jake Wilson (vocalist) lead into one of their biggest hits “Supervillain” with massive jumps and dancing from one side of the stage to the other. The crowd erupted into chants of “She knows the drama like the back of, back of her hand. I’m just a supervillain.” Throughout the night, some other favorites played were “Overthinking,” “Go to Hell,” and “Goldfish.” Knowing their fans, Between You & Me knew the perfect song to end on and that was “Dakota.” As the crowd sang the final lyrics of BYAM’s set, Hunny was standing side stage ready to take on the room full of eager pop-punk lovers.
Hunny is a four-piece act based out of California, whose music is influenced by ’80s and ’90s alt-rock artists who added a punk-rock genre to the kings of the new age tour. Excited shrieks came from the crowded room as drummer Joey took his seat and started the song “JFK.” They included “Shy,” “Loser,” “Televised,” and “Homesick” singles from the albums Yes.Yes.Yes.Yes.Yes. and Homesick which created a powerful and catchy set. Vocalist Jason’s eccentric attitude was contagious for the almost sold-out show as the cheers grew louder. As they sang their final song, they got the sea of people up and on their feet and set the mood for the headliners. Albany, NY locals State Champs have paved their way as one of the top pop-punk bands of the genre. This is their fourth headlining tour for their third studio album. Kings of the New Age, Living Proof, and Around The World And Back give them a variety of what to play.It was time for the headliners and the sea of pop-punk enthusiasts were shouting “State Champs” over and over until the lights went up and Evan Ambrosio, Ryan Scott Graham, Tyler Szalkowski, and Derek DisCanio took the stage. These dudes never fail to impress when they perform. The set started with the song “Just Sound” and “Mine is Gold” followed. Orlando fans, of course, sang along and crowd surfed to show their support. State Champs has quite a discography with a lot of fan favorites and they had a stacked setlist for Orlando with ”Outta My Head,” “Criminal,” “Frozen,” and “Half Empty.” Before you could think they forgot about the songs that started their careers, don’t worry they didn’t. Derek started the song “Elevated” but with a twist. They turned it into a mashup of songs from their 2015 album Around the World and Back. This included “All You Are in History,” “All or Nothing,” and “Breaking Ground.” The packed room filled with fans, some of who even traveled hours and states to see the show, were chanting, “One more song” as State Champs jumped back out to play the encore of the show, “Everybody But You.”
Derek said how lucky they’ve been to be able to make this a career and how they’re currently writing another album. The light show and video wall were also very important parts of this tour. They have created graphics and lyric videos for each song and put a lot of thought into their lighting and production which has made this their biggest and most successful tour yet.
