State Champs at Emo’s in Austin, TX

The American pop-punk band, State Champs, kicked off their highly anticipated North American tour with an electrifying opening show at Emo’s in Austin, TX.

The show had four openers before the headlining act. The first of the night was local artist Floor Space. The band was a special guest for tonight only. Last year, they released their album Maybe This Is It. The band is led by singer/guitarist Charlie Bruno. The Austin-based band brought their A-Game and had the crowd completely enjoying themselves.

Afterwards, was the duo Daisy Grenade. The punk-grunge band is made up of two members: Dani Nigro and Keaton Whittaker. Fallout Boys’ Pete Wentz produced their first EP, Sophomore Slump. Daisy Grenade is set to finish the tour with State Champs. Daisy Grenade released their single “How To Hide A Body” in October and thankfully performed it at the show. They also played songs such as “Are You Scared Yet?” and “Riot.” They closed with one of their new singles, “Hypocrite.”

Following Daisy Grenade was another pop-punk band Meet Me @ the Altar. Meet Me @ the Altar has a unique formation story. The three members, Edith Victoria (vocals), Téa Campbell (guitar), and Ada Juarez (drums), met on the internet and worked on their music remotely before finally coming together to play. In 2018, they released their first EP together, Changing States. Last year, they released their debut album Past // Present // Future. They controlled the audience their entire set, with songs like “Hit Like A Girl” where they made all the girls in the crowd start a mosh pit. They also performed a cover of Lit’s “My Own Worst Enemy.”

The next act was the American rock band, Knuckle Puck. Knuckle Puck’s sound keeps more to its old-school punk-rock roots. The band consists of Joe Taylor, Kevin Maida, John Siorek, Nick Casasanto, and Ryan Rumchaks. In late October, the band released a new single called “On All Cylinders.” The band came out all guns blazing. With incredible energy, the guys played their hits such as “Double Helix” and “Groundhog Day.” They also asked the crowd multiple times to open up the pit and mosh.

Last but certainly not least, State Champs made their grand 2024 North American tour debut. The New York-based band is made up of four members: Derek DiScanio (vocals), Tyler Szalkowski (guitar), Ryan Scott Graham (guitar), and Evan Ambrosio (drums). The band is known for their classic pop-punk sound. In 2010, the crew released their first EP, Ep-2010. Since then, they have been releasing music consistently. Their latest album was released the day of this show. The self-titled album is filled with some of the most high-energy tracks they’ve made.

They opened with “Silver Cloud,” a track from their newest album. They also performed live debuts of new songs “Clueless” and “Hell Of It.” During “Around the World and Back” Daisy Grenade came onto stage and performed with them. After another live debut, “Save Face Story,” they left and then returned for their encore. For their encore, they closed with “Everybody but You” and “Secrets.”
