Fighting the cold and rain, Soccer Mommy gave East Austin a performance to remember with her relatable lyricism and catchy melodies.
The musician behind the stage-name Soccer Mommy is singer-songwriter Sophia Allison. Allison was born in Switzerland but grew up in Nashville, TN, where she studied guitar and swing band. In 2015, Allison began to post her self-produced music on Bandcamp under her better known alias Soccer Mommy. A year later, she released her first full-length album, For Young Hearts. She’s toured with the likes of Kacey Musgraves, Paramore, Foster the People, and many more. In October, she released her latest album, Evergreen.
Opening for Soccer Mommy is LA-based singer-songwriter Hana Vu. Hana Vu is known for her indie rock and lo-fi sound. She started performing at the young age of 14 and eventually released her self-produced EP How Many Times Have You Driven By at the age of 17. In 2019, she released a double EP Nicole Kidman/Anne Hathaway, named after her two favorite actresses. Last May, Hana Vu released her latest album Romanticism, an album that evaluates the struggle of maturing and becoming an adult while also yearning for the simplicity of childhood.
During her set, she played songs such as “Airplane” and “22,” both from her latest album. She also played older songs such as “Crying on the Subway” from her debut EP. Throughout her performance, fans at the barricade matched her energy and kept the night lively. She closed her set with “Love,” the closing track from Romanticism.
At 9:10 PM, Soccer Mommy took to the stage. The rain and the cold couldn’t deter the show or the excited crowd enduring it all night. Allison opened her set with her song “Abigail” from her latest album, Evergreen. To combat the cold, each of the musicians on stage had a space heater set up next to their positions. The singer made sure to check in on fans throughout the night, asking if they were staying warm, to which a fan bundled at the front shouted “We’re trying!” Allison thanked everyone for sticking it out to see her perform. The band played more songs such as “circle the drain” and “crawling in my skin,” both tracks from her 2020 album color theory.
As the night came to an end, they played “Salt in Wound,” another 2024 released song, and “Your Dog” from her album Clean (2018). Despite the temperature continuing to drop, the audience didn’t seem to falter. Even with the tempting heaters towards the back of the venue, fans stood next to the stage huddled together, singing every word. Soccer Mommy exited the stage only to return for a two-song encore. Allison and her band performed “Changes” from Evergreen (2024) and “Don’t Ask Me” from Sometimes Forever (2022).
