The elder emos united at the House of Blues in Orlando to see Silverstein and The Amity Affliction co-headlining tour.
The tour swung through Orlando, Florida giving us a taste of nostalgia from early 2000s emo and new music from their discographies. Along with the two known legacy acts, they had Holding Absence and UnityTX as supporting bands. This tour had a bit of every genre from rap, punk, and emo to metal.
First to take the stage was Dallas-based UnityTX who started with their most famous song “RUCKUS.” The crowd’s energy went from zero to one hundred in a matter of seconds. Their setlist included seven jump-worthy songs from their album Madboy which dropped in 2019. Jay Webster got the crowd excited and ready for the next opener Holding Absence.
The UK band Holding Absence was more than ready to go. Their set started with a simple light show but a crazy amount of energy from vocalist Lucas Woodland. Lucas jumped from side-stage to side-stage breaking out into the song “Aching Longing,” their latest release which is played on all alternative Spotify playlists. The four-piece band played some of their fan favorites from their self-titled album Holding Absence like “Wilt and “Like a Shadow.” Their post-hardcore sound made these guys a great fit for this tour. The lights when down and screams erupted from the crowd. Silverstein joined the room and started with “Infinite” from their 2020 album A Beautiful Place to Drown. The room echoed with the lyrics “When the darkness finds me, all this feels Infinite.” Silverstein has quite the discography after 23 years as a band. Vocalist Shane said, “It’s gotten harder to create a setlist over the years because of how much music we have.” They pushed out a song wheel that had about 20 songs listed on it and called out some longtime Orlando friends to spin the wheel. This changes the middle of their setlist every night. This night, some fan favorites played were “Call It Karma,” “We’re Already Dead,” and “Massachusetts.” As the set ended on “Afterglow,” Shane said, ” I’ll see you soon Orlando.” So keep a lookout for upcoming tour dates and new music. The crowd was already screaming at the top of their lungs from Silverstein’s set but the other reason all the elder emos united were up next. It only got louder as The Amity Affliction started with the banger “Coffin,” along with some other fan favorites. Joel Birch (vocalist) knows how to take the stage by storm, proving that after 20 years of being a band, they still love doing this for the fans. After a few songs, Joel announced he was happy to be back in Orlando and excited to see some old friends and familiar faces in the crowd. The setlist included songs from “Misery,” “Let The Ocean Take Me,” “Everybody Loves You… Once You Leave Them,” and “This Could Be Heartbreak,” giving a little bit of everything to their new and OG fans. For three hours, the fans went wild and let loose at the Orlando House of Blues as everyone ran to the merch tables and VIP lines started forming. Walking out of the venue, all you heard was “They never disappoint.” You didn’t need to know who they were talking about because it can be said about both co-headliners.
