Pixies and Modest Mouse at Germania Insurance Amphitheater in Austin, TX

Pixies and Modest Mouse brought an unforgettable night to Austin’s Germania Insurance Amphitheater, enthralling the audience with their powerful performances and vibrant energy.

Beginning at the end of May, Pixies, Modest Mouse, and Cat Power set out on their 2024 North American tour. As their tour came to a near end, they made a stop in Austin at the very own Germania Amphitheater. The Germania Amphitheater is located at the famous Circuit of the Americas in East Austin. With Pixies and Modest Mouse co-headling, it was sure to be an amazing experience.

Modest Mouse is an American rock band who attained critical acclaim in the late 90s and has skyrocketed since. The band is made up of Isaac Brock (vocals/guitar/banjo), Simon O’Connor (guitar), Keith Karman (keys/guitar), Damon Cox (drums), and Ben Massarella (percussion). Isaac Brock is the only original member of the band. In 2021, the band released their latest album, The Golden Casket.

They opened their set with “The Stars Are Projectors” from their 2000 album The Moon & Antarctica. For “Gravity Rides Everything,” they had a teenage guest join them on stage to play the steel guitar. Before performing “Heart Cooks Brain,” Brock turned around to the band and asked them if they wanted to play the song. The audience could assume that it was a last-minute addition to the enthusiastic tone Brock had when he asked his bandmates. Following the classic “Heart Cooks Brain,” they played their Grammy-nominated single “Float On.” They then closed their set with “Cowboy Dan” from The Lonesome Crowded West.

Pixies have been making music since the late 80s. During that time, they received commercial success with their sophomore album Doolittle which entered the Billboard 200s and reached number 8. Since then, they’ve gone on hiatus, reformed, and most importantly created a great deal of beautiful music. Today, the band is made up of Black Francis (vocals/guitar), David Lovering (drums), Joey Santiago (guitar), and Emma Richardson (bass). Earlier this month, they released two new singles: “You’re So Impatient” and “Que Sera Sera.”

Despite it being 8:40 PM, the sun still shone its light in the sky as Pixies took to the stage. They opened their set with “U-Mass.” Their melodic vitality quickly spread across the excited audience. To everyone’s surprise, they performed a cover of The Jesus and Mary Chain’s “Head On.” After playing favorites from Doolittle, such as “Gouge Away” and “Monkey Gone to Heaven,” Richardson sang lead vocals on a cover of Peter Ivers & David Lynch’s “In Heaven (Lady in the Radiator Song).” As soon as “Here Comes Your Man” began everyone jumped up to dance, even though it was exhaustingly hot. As their set came to an end, they of course performed their hit “Where Is My Mind?” before closing with another cover, “Winterlong” by Neil Young. Together, the four made their way to the edge of the stage where they took their final bows.
