Omar Apollo brought his a-game to Dallas to promote his new album, Ivory, and to show fans how to have a good time.
Sunday evening, May 22, lines began to form in anticipation for R&B pop artist Omar Apollo. Omar is on his Desvelado North American Tour, but soon will be visiting Europe to hit a couple of cities across the pond. While at House of Blues in Dallas, Apollo was accompanied by two openers, Niko Rubio and Deb Never. The energy this trio brought to town was incomparable to anything going on in the 100-mile radius.
Starting off the night was Niko Rubio. She was exactly what the night needed to get the crowd going. Her newest single, “Love Me Till U Hate Me,” was adored by the audience. Even security and staff couldn’t help but nod their heads and dance a bit. Niko has toured with Apollo for the last ten shows and will finish the tour with them.
Following Rubio, Deb Never took the stage and immediately captivated the crowd. Never is known for her hip-hop and grunge style of music. It wasn’t until 2019, after her friends peer pressured her to upload her music onto Soundcloud, that her EP House on Wheels took off.Last year, Never released her debut album, Where Have All the Flowers Gone? and has spent the last year promoting it by touring with other artists. In January of this year, Never released the single “Crutches,” which was well-received by the crowd. The artist was amazing and anyone in the room could tell Never was having the time of her life. Her set was only 30 minutes but ask anyone in the audience and they would have wished it was more.
After about 30 minutes of anticipation, Apollo ran onto the stage with a smile on his face. He opened the night with one of his newest releases, “Talk,” from his forth studio album Ivory. The newest album hones in on Apollo’s style. Apollo continued to play one of his classics, “Erase.” It has a funky jazz feel that the audience loved. Mid-set, Apollo informed the crowd that it was “about to get real Mexican.” and then sang “En El Olvido” which is one of his Spanish songs.Nearing the end of his set, Apollo asked the crowd, “How many homosexuals do we have in this room?” and the room exploded with cheers. Omar is known for his huge support for the LGBTQ+ community and even has merchandise that says, “Heterosexuality can be cured. Just watch Omar Apollo.” His support for the community creates a safe space at shows where everyone gets to unapologetically be who they are. It was magical to see everyone so comfortable in the high-intensity environment.
Omar closed the show with “Want U Around” from his album Apolonio, but came back on stage after chants of encore. He then proceeded to performed two more songs. Those two songs were “Go Away” and “Tamagotchi.” Apollo only has a few more shows before the end of this tour, but if he happens to come near, he is definitely an artist worth seeing.
