Mudvayne at Pine Knob Music Theatre in Clarkston, MI

Mudvayne, the monsters of mosh pit madness, bring all of their freaky friends to party with their peeps at Pine Knob.

When the headbanging heroes, Mudvayne, come to town, you can bet your sweet bippy they are going to throw down the most masterful moments of maniacal mosh-pittery that will mesmerize the mere mortal metalhead within thee. This sopping, sloppy Sunday night is no exception, as they have brought The Psychotherapy Sessions Tour for a stop in the mighty mitten. Tonight, they have quite the metal militia in store for these music-loving Michiganders… so let’s see what’s on the ticket… BOOM!!!! Look at this lineup: Butcher Babies, Nonpoint, Gwar, Coal Chamber, and of course, the host of tonight’s metal madness… Mudvayne. We have much to cover, so without further ado… let’s get to some goo!

First to the stage for this sultry symphony are the barbarically bodacious beast, belting babes, the Butcher Babies. The ladies and crew from L.A. can ball with the best of them and hit the stage at fuel throttle. They get our night started with “Red Thunder,” “Monsters Ball,” and the fan favorite “BEAVER CAGE.” Dual frontwoman Heidi Shepherd steps to the mic and says, “What time is it…? I can’t f***ing hear you… It’s killing time baby!” (as they launch into the tune while getting some air launching from their risers!). The BBs oblige their screaming fans and transition perfectly into “Bottom of a Bottle.” With hair swingin’ and some karate kickin’, we see these ladies give the crowd the good smack around they came for… getting right into your guts in the happiest of ways. Fun BB factoid: dual frontwoman Carla Harvey is a Detroit area native, with a degree in Mortuary Science, and a former embalmer and funeral director. Heidi Shepherd is/was a professional athlete and competed in the 2003 junior Olympics in Moscow, Russia before breaking her back training for the pole vault. They finish up the night with “Last December” and close the set out on “Magnolia Boulevard.”

Next in our lineup comes our high-flying heroes of hard-core heavy… five rockers from Fort Lauderdale called Nonpoint. Nonpoint always gives an energetic, aggressive, and “on-point “performance that is full of headbanging adrenaline. Tonight, true to form, the quintet hit the stage with those mad hops and Elias Soriano‘s braids gyrating about like a rabid Medusa. Nonpoint opens with “Victim/Dodge Your Destiny,” “What a Day,” and the axe-grinding mega-hit “A Million Watts.” Guitarist, Rasheed Thomas, Jaysin Zeilstra, and bassist Adam Woloszyn are tight and rock those grooves with surgical precision while drummer Robb Rivera brings that thunder butter that makes that Nonpoint 3-D sound go to 11. They bring their set to a close with a deluxe, long-play version of “Bullet With a Name” (featuring an epic stage leap with all band members getting airtime in unison!).

Are you ready for some shock rock, stagecraft… featuring all the body fluids you could imagine? Holding down position three in tonight’s lineup are the metal mutant Muppets, known to melt faces… GWAR. Looking about, you might notice the stage has been covered with plastic and this is for a good reason. Tonight, the crowd will get three flavors of sprayed fluids… red, blue, and of course, green (you’ve got to have green, right?). Blothar The Berserker gets things going as he ramps the crowd up with the face-smashing banger “Hail, Genocide!” “The Cutter” comes next and we see a stage fight break out amongst the band, resulting in a spinning saw device cutting the loser into pieces while spraying the crowd with its first dose of sticky red blood-like substance. GWAR presses on with some of their most iconic hits including “Sick of You,” “Let Us Slay,” and “Berserker Mode.” Tonight, they have even brought a special guest… a Vladimir Putin clone from the ultra-verse. Putin proceeds to get smacked around a bit, before a GWARLY dismemberment (and spraying the crowd with more goo). GWAR wraps up their sloppy set with the AC/DC cover, “If You Want Blood (You’ve Got It).”

The night presses on as Coal Chamber takes to the stage. A fun CC factoid: the band was initially named She’s In Pain and once they were signed with Road Runner Records, it was officially changed to Coal Chamber in 1997. Chamber opens their set with the hard-hitting track “Loco.” This fiery crowd is ready for more and they follow up with “Fiend,” “Big Truck,” and the Flood cover, “Rowboat.” More moshpit madness breaks out as Coal Chamber takes it up another notch with “Drove,” “Dark Days,” and everybody’s favorite smack around, “Oddity.” Coal Chamber brings the smoking set to an end with “Something Told Me” and they bring the set to a close on a smokin’ rendition of “Sway.”

Are you ready for the main event…?

Well, let’s take in the sights. The time is now 9:15 PM and we can see a huge black curtain with the MV/Mudvayne symbol brightly illuminated in the middle. 9:24 PM the house music takes an abrupt turn as it begins to blast “Monolith.” The angst is felt as the hungry fans begin to come to life. 9:25 PM… wahhh BANG!!!! The curtain falls to reveal frontman Chad Gray perched like Spider-Man on a stage riser before going airborne and landing center stage as the squad explodes into the intro of “Not Falling.” This superhero move sends bolts of anticipatory lighting through this capacity crowd and officially starts a moment of Mudvanye’s metal madness. Seatbelts on kiddos… time to party!

“Under My Skin” is next and Gray steps off the stage and onto the protective barrier on the main floor. The fans go ballistic as he reaches out and gives high fives and fist bumps to any and all he can reach. There… standing in the middle of the crowd is a young lady, 8-year-old-ish on top of her Dad’s shoulders (and looking a bit like Cindy Lou Who!). Chad instantly spots the youngun’, and breaks spooky character a bit to smile ear to ear for her. Seconds feel like hours as he slowly reaches out to her and successfully gets a fist bump from her little hand. The crowd goes BONKERS and roars as CG continues to grin while finishing off the tune.

A blast of fog canons takes us into the gritty “Internal Primates,” followed by an extended version of the hit “World So Cold.” Gray orders his crowd to take out their cell phones, and light this place up… “In 30 seconds look over your shoulder… It’s a beautiful thing!” Gray takes a moment to express to the fans how much heavy metal has saved his life, and the tour was named The Psychotherapy Sessions for a reason. He then says, “This song is heavy as balls… I wanna see you lose your f***ing miiiiiiinds!” The band fires right into “A New Game,” followed by “Severed” and an extra spicy version of “Death Blooms.”

MV’s rhythm section, bassist Ryan Martinie and drummer Matthew McDonough are a great team and hammer down that backbeat that vibrates your very soul. Gray once again steps to the mic to address the crowd. “You guys want to get a little mental with me… I’m inviiiiiiiiiiiting you! What d’ya say we get together and get f***ing NUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUTTTTTTS!!!!” Right on cue, MV hammers into “Dull Boy,” “Determined,” and then follows up with “Nothing to Gein.” This sweaty crowd of happy headbangers loses their shit when MV launches the intro to “Dig.” Everyone growls along with Gray word for word while furiously fist-pumping to the tunes driving groove.

Mudvayne closes the night on the timeless classic “Happy?” As the smoke settles, revealing the rubble and ashes of what was once the legendary Pine Knob… there stands the mighty metal men known as Mudvayne. Gray humbly thanks his crowd, and even peals off his lobotomy scar to hand it off to a lucky fan… now how cool is that!
