Indie-rock band Mt. Joy visited Dallas, Texas on their Orange Blood Tour to perform some songs from their latest album.
Starting the month of November strong, Mt. Joy played at Dallas’ South Side Ballroom. Their third studio album, Orange Blood, came out in June earlier this year. The band, which formed in Los Angeles in 2016, brought their lively energy to the locals of downtown DTX. The band is made up of a five-member team, Jackie Miclau (keys), Matt Quinn (vocals/guitar), Sam Cooper (guitar), Sotiris Eliopoulos (drums), and Michael Byrnes (bass). Their tour started in June and is coming to a close next week.
Accompanying Mt. Joy is supporting artist The Brook & The Bluff. Based out of Nashville, this soulful group started the night strong by instantly captivating the crowd. Their band members are Joseph Settine (vocals/guitar), John Canada (drums), Alec Bolton (guitar), Fred Lankford (bass), and touring member Kevin Canada (keys). They played some of their popular songs such as “Misnomer” from their 2021 release Yard Sale, “Everything is Just a Mess” and “Halfway Up” from their sophomore album First Place, and a couple of throwbacks from their first self-titled album, “Masks” and “Rush.” Their presence on stage created an unquestionably captivating show.
Mt. Joy started at approximately 9:15 pm and opened with “Sheep,” which was released as a single in 2017 and appeared on their first studio album which was self-titled. It wasn’t until the fourth song that they played “Orange Blood” from the latest album with the same name. From that album, they also played “Ruins,” “Bathroom Light,” “Evergreen,” and “Lemon Tree.” Each member took turns showing off their talent by shredding a solo, whether that be Miclau on keys or Eliopoulos on drums, the gang is no doubt impressively talented. Nearing the end of the night, Quinn introduces “Julia” as “a song about ordering food high,” mere seconds before singing the lyrics, “I’m ordering food high.” Mid-song, they transition into a cover of “Crazy” by Gnarls Barkley which the audience loved. Before leaving the stage, Mt. Joy invited Fort Worth, Texas’s own Abraham Alexander to the stage. Together, Alexander and Quinn perform “Silver Lining,” another song from their first album. After thirteen songs, the band went backstage for a break while fans cheered for an encore. They gladly came back on stage to perform three more songs. They started the encore with “Strangers,” another song from their sophomore album. They then invited Abraham Alexander back out onto the stage, as well as The Brook & The Bluff. The group collectively performed “Johnson Song.” The show was closed with their first ever single that came out in 2016, “Astrovan.” Their last scheduled show of the year will be in Mexico City, Mexico, but if they come to a nearby town be sure to check out the remarkable band that is Mt. Joy.
