Mother Mother and Cavetown at Moody Amphitheater in Austin, TX

In a mesmerizing co-headlining show, Cavetown and Mother Mother captivated fans with an enchanting blend of dynamic performances at Austin, Texas’ Moody Amphitheater.

Starting off the night is pop-punk band Meet Me @ the Altar. As a group, they have been making music since 2015 and have opened for other large acts like Green Day. The three-member group gave the following acts a run for their money. It seemed that a member was absent for the night but according to their Instagram was present for their next show. In January 2023, they debuted their first studio album, Past // Present // Future. Their short 30-minute set packed a punch. They played songs such as “Say It (To My Face)” and “Same Language.” Despite the Texas heat, the band continued as if the temperature wasn’t over 90°.

The next act was co-headlining artist Cavetown. Robbie Skinner is an English singer/songwriter who makes music under the name Cavetown. His style of music is bedroom pop/indie rock. Over the past decade, he has had several songs go viral on Tiktok including “Boys Will Be Bugs” and “Lemon Boy.” This month , Cavetown released a single with illuminati hotties titled “Didn’t.” He also had an album come out in May called little vice.

While fans waited for Robbie to perform his set, members of the audience made up some fun of their own. Two people gathered all the water cups from the pit and stacked them as high as they could on their heads. Each time a cup was added the whole amphitheater went crazy. The crowd also made sure to cheer on every crew member who came onto the stage. Whether they were sound-checking or putting up props, they got a commotion from the crowd. Cavetown opened his show with “let them know they’re on your mind,” a song from his new album. Mid-set, Robbie stopped the set to check on a fan at the barricade who seemed to have passed out from the heat. After security helped them out, Robbie reminded everyone to stay hydrated and look out for each other. He played fan favorites such as “Lemon Boy” and “frog.” As his set came to an end, he closed with his song “Devil Town” from his self-titled debut album.

After the sun had set, Mother Mother made their way onto the stage. They opened with “Nobody Escapes.” The Canadian indie rock band is made up of five members: Ryan Guldemond (vocals/guitar), Molly Guldemond (vocals/keys), Jasmin Parkin (vocals/keys), Ali Siadat (drums), and Mike Young (bass). Quickly into the set, they performed fan favorites such as “Arms Tonite” and “Hayloft II.” They even did a mash-up of their song “The Matrix” and Pixies “Where Is My Mind?”

Later in the set, Ryan made a very heartfelt, encouraging speech to all the young artists in the audience. He also thanked Meet Me @ The Altar and Cavetown for being such inspirations to them. To fit more songs into their set, Mother Mother did a beautiful mash-up of six of their songs. As the night came to an end, they closed their set with their classic “Hayloft” which led into the chorus of Lana Del Rey’s “Video Games.” After the lights went out and fans cheered for more, they gave in and came back out for one more song. Ryan performed the title track from their newest album Grief Chapter. Mother Mother and Cavetown have about ten more shows across North America before they wrap up the tour.
