Antone’s Nightclub in Austin, Texas, came alive thanks to American musician and singer-songwriter Mitch Rowland while on his North American tour.
Grammy award-winning songwriter, Mitch Rowland has been making music for the last decade. The multi-talented musician is mainly known for his association and work with Harry Styles. Through his solo career, he has proven over the past few years that he is more than a shadow to the star. In 2023, Rowland released his first solo project, Come June. Mitch Rowland’s sound falls primarily within the genres of soul, blues, and rock. His style often incorporates elements of folk and alternative as well, creating a unique and eclectic sound. The alternative album was produced by Rob Schnapf, who just so happened to join Rowland on tour to help perform the album. In addition to Schnapf, Rowland was joined by his wife Sarah Jones (drums), Aiden Finn (keys), and Matt Schuessler (bass).
Opening for Rowland was small indie artist Harris Harper. Harper performed a beautiful set that was entirely too short. Each song was more angelic than the last. Accompanying Harper was her brother whom she introduced as CJ. Harper didn’t speak much, but she didn’t have to. Her music and lyrics spoke for her. As of now, she only has two songs available to stream online, “Make You Quit” and “Longest Apocalypse” which is her latest release from 2022.
The small venue made for an intimate night and despite the smell of Antone’s famous “Cliffy” hotdogs in the air, everyone was excited to be there. When Rowland and the four members of his touring band made their way to the stage, the smell faded. They started the night with “See The Way You Roll” and “Bluebells.” After, he played a new song “Carry On With Your Tea,” which is set to be released in stores on April 20th as a part of Record Store Day. He continued to perform other songs from his debut, Come June. During a break between songs, Rowland told the crowd they were the nicest hecklers. In response, the crowd barked at the singer-songwriter. As the rest of the band laughed at the audience’s response, Mitch kept his monotone, deadpan demeanor.Towards the end of the night, he played songs such as “Medium Low,” “Here Comes The Comeback,” and the title track “Come June.” They left the stage but the fans knew that as long as they didn’t put the lights on, there was a chance for an encore. They chanted “One more song!” until finally, the band came back onto the stage. For their final song of the night, they played The Velvet Underground’s “Oh! Sweet Nuthin’.”
Mitch Rowland will continue his tour until the end of March 2024 so be sure to check him out.
