Canadian electro-pop artist Lights has fans on their feet, dancing and singing on her Baby I’m Back tour with support from Tillie.
Emerging artist Tillie fires up the crowd with a highly entertaining set, leading it off with “Peachie.” Her songs are catchy, span genres, and have the crowd engaged. “Hell Yeah!” finds her playing the bass which, along with her drummer, has a powerful bottom end and fast pace. After “Flip a Switch,” she plays Britney Spears’ “Lucky” which gets the crowd cheering, singing along and dancing. Tillie plays up to the crowd throughout the show and seems to be having lot of fun. Her latest single “TMYK” is another upbeat song that has her dancing across the stage. The crowd is loving it. After “Mood Swings” and “Reality Bites,” she plays “Save Yourself” and leads the crowd in some overhead clapping. This is her last night on the tour and to celebrate, Lights comes out and they do a shot. She closes it out with “Loud Mouth” which at one point has her letting out some squeals on the guitar. She is certainly an artist who has a bright future judging from the crowd’s reaction.
The lights dim and Lights takes the stage to huge cheers. She gets things started with “Prodigal Daughter” from her latest album PEP. It has been four long years since she last played Detroit and the fans tonight are ready for some fun. After “Ice” she plays the popular “Up We Go” which has the fans dancing and singing, while she dances about the stage. You would never know she broke her foot two weeks ago based on how well she is moving about the stage. She even jumps off the drum riser at least five times during her set. Her stage is one of the most well-lit and the sound is dialed in tight. A large video screen at the back displays images and videos throughout the set that further enhances the already great performance.Following another new song “Salt and Vinegar,” she really gets the crowd moving with the upbeat “Siberia” and follows that with “Savage” which has her doing backbends and flipping her hair wildly. “New Fears” has her playing piano and showing her singing with some soaring vocals. Slowing it down, she sits down at the piano and is joined by her bassist and drummer for “Quiet” from her 2009 debut album The Listening. Next, she plays “Real Thing” which has a trippy vibe and has the crowd putting their hands in the air. “Skydiving” is one of the highlights of the set which has her squatting down at the edge of the stage and reaching out to them. She seems to really love her fans and they surely love her.
“Batshit” is driven by some thunderous bass that you can feel throughout the venue and has the fans dancing and bouncing. During the new song “Beside Myself,” she gets the crowd to light up and wave their cell phones while cool white beams shine out from behind her. A fan favorite, “Running With the Boys,” has everyone pumped up and moving about and gets a huge round of applause. Keeping the energy high, she brings out Tillie and plays the super catchy new song “Okay Okay” which has the crowd singing along. She closes out the main portion of her set with “Love Me”, a collaboration she recorded with Felix Cartal. It has the crowd singing out loud and dancing yet again. Lights really knows how to connect with her fans and keep them engaged all night long.
Returning to the stage, she plays “Grip” which starts slow and has the stage dimly lit along with fog and some white back-lighting that then transitions into strobes. It has her stalking the stage and flipping her hair about. Once again, she is joined by Tillie on stage and they do another shot before she closes out her set with “In My Head.”
Lights has once again outdone herself with a show that takes it to the next level and leaves the fans wanting more. Be sure to catch her when she tours again as it is one of the best live shows out there and a bargain given how pricey tickets have become for some artists.
