JAWNY at Antone’s in Austin, TX

American indie singer/songwriter JAWNY sold out and performed to an extremely excited crowd at Antone’s in downtown Austin, Texas.

In 2016, Jacob Lee-Nicholas Sullenger moved to Philadelphia and began making music under the name Johnny Utah. Three years later, JAWNY released the hit single “Honeypie” and was signed to Interscope Records the following year. The song was featured on some of Spotify’s playlists, exposing it to thousands of people. In 2021, a single from his debut project For Abby, “Sabotage,” reached the 34th spot on Billboard’s Alternative Airplay chart. In March of this year, JAWNY released his debut album It’s Never Fair, Always True. He also started touring the album this year and has visited over 20 different cities before making his way to Austin.

Opening for JAWNY was solo artist SEB. The indie-pop artist went viral on TikTok two years ago with his song “seaside_demo.” Over one million users created videos using the song. He now has almost half a million followers on TikTok. Earlier this year, he released the single “Come Down Soon.” During the show, SEB thanked the audience for listening to his music because he wouldn’t be touring with JAWNY if it wasn’t for them. He played a lot of unreleased songs that he said were expected to be released this summer. Naturally, he closed his set with “seaside_demo.”

At about 9:00 PM, the house lights were turned off, and “Mr. Brightside” by The Killers played to hype up the crowd. After the song faded out, “intro” from his latest album played. At the end of the song, JAWNY and his two bandmates ran onto the stage. His bandmates are Gambee (bass) and Curtis Kelly (drums). They started the set with “strawberry chainsaw,” which was one of the singles from It’s Never Fair, Always True.

Towards the beginning of the set, he announced that his brother was somewhere in the crowd. He then played the successful single “Sabotage” before announcing that his tour manager tried to book a bigger venue, but he insisted on Antone’s because, in 2019, he opened for Still Woozy there. He also told the crowd he wanted to make this set the longest set yet. He performed a throwback “4Tounce.”

Afterward, JAWNY asked the audience if he could play some songs back-to-back without stopping. He played four songs before breaking into a cover of Taylor Swift’s “You Belong With Me.” He performed a few more songs from his new album before playing the iconic “Honeypie.” Before closing the set, he made sure to perform “selfish hate” and “Tombstone Grey.”

This tour is just coming to a close, so be sure to keep an eye out when he’s next on the road.
