Indie enthusiasts rejoice as flipturn brings their electrifying sound to Emo’s in Austin for an unforgettable evening of live music.
Florida-based band, flipturn have been together since their high school days. The band is made up of Dillon Basse (vocals/guitar), Tristan Duncan (guitar), Mitch Fountain (keys/guitar), Madeline Jarman (drums), and Devon VonBalson (drums). In August of 2022, they released their debut album Shadowglow. Since then, they have been touring non-stop. They just picked up again this year on their Something More tour and they don’t plan on stopping. Along with the many other sold-out shows, the night proved to be a worthwhile way to be spent.
Opening for the Floridans is Richy Mitch & the Coal Miners. The dedicated band self-recorded all of their albums independently. They spent a fair amount of time as a long-distance band but despite their challenges, they managed to create two amazing albums during that time. Their latest release was in February of 2024, the single “Northstar.” In 2017, they released their first album RMCM. Their hit song “Evergreen” was on there and has since gone viral on Instagram and TikTok. It’s almost impossible to scroll on reels without hearing the beautiful song. Naturally, when they started to strum the chords to “Evergreen” fans perked their ears up and got excited. During their set, they also played some new unreleased music. Richy Mitch and the Coal Miners’ music has a dynamic blend of Americana, folk, and rock. In addition, their lyrics tell amazingly beautiful stories.
At a little after 9:00 PM, flipturn took the stage. They opened with “Churches” from their debut album Citrona. They played a few more older songs before getting into their new discography like “The Fall” and “Sad Disco,” both from Shadowglow. Then they announced that they would be playing a new unreleased song, Inner Wave. The coolest thing about flipturn is their unity. Seeing them play together is so special. It’s like all five of them are so in sync. Their concert wasn’t just for the audience but for each other. They played a few more songs like “Six Below” and “August.” It wasn’t until after “Space Cowboy” that they left to make the crowd chant for an encore. To which, they happily obliged. They returned to play three more songs. The first was a cover of The Strokes “Reptilia.” They then played another new song “Burnout Days” and then finally closed with “Nickel.” Lead singer Dillon barely had to sing considering the crowd carried the performance. Even over the loudspeakers, the fans made sure to sing so the neighbors could hear them sing every word. Continuing the rest of the tour they will be headed out West and then back East again. These guys seriously never rest and it pays off.
