ERRA at Saint Andrew’s Hall in Detroit, MI

Metalcore band ERRA has fans rocking hard on the Cure Tour with support from Make Them Suffer, Void of Vision, and Novelists.

French band Novelists get the evening off to a blazing start with a short but killer set of progressive metalcore. They lead with “Lost Cause” and follow that with another song, “Terrorist,” from the same Déjà Vu album. “Terrorist” features some rapid-fire drumming from Amael Durand, solid bass playing by Nicolas Delestrade, and the dual guitar attack of Florestan Durand and Pierre Danel. The crowd is loving it with moshing and crowd surfing starting early. The addition of vocalist Camille Contreras in 2023 has added a new dimension to their sound and is stellar on songs like “Prisoner” and “Mourning Dawn” where she adds a softer touch at times along with soaring vocals. They have the crowd jumping during “Smoke Signal,” and close out their set with “Turn It Up” which has the crowd showing their appreciation with huge cheers.

Void of Vision from Melbourne, Australia keeps the crowd fired up as they tear through an eight-song set that is heavy on songs from their 2023 album Chronicles, including “THE LONELY PEOPLE,” “HELL HELL HELL,” “VAMPYR,” “ALTAR,” and “INTO THE DARK.” Their set also includes “Year of the Rat” and “Ghost in the Machine.” They lead with a new song, “EMPTY,” which immediately sets the tone for their set with Jack Bergin providing the unclean vocals as he actively works the stage and makes use of the platforms up front. It does not take long for him to remove his leather jacket.

The sound is heavy with powerful drumming by George Pfaender, James McKendrick on guitar and clean vocals, and Mitch Fairlie on bass. They have fans bouncing, moshing, and crowd surfing that keep the energy high during their whole set. Jack keeps them engaged with side-to-side waving and gets a circle pit going during “ALTAR.” Before their final song “IN THE DARK,” Jack makes a call out to ERRA for having three international bands sharing the stage tonight. The crowd shows their appreciation with fist pumps, horns, and cheers. Judging from those reactions, it would seem they have a solid fanbase already or have captured many new fans tonight.

Make Them Suffer from Perth, Australia, has the most intense set of the evening. They kick it off with “Ghost of Me.” It is led by Sean Harmanis on the harsh vocals, along with the pummeling drums of Jordan Mather, the deep bass of Jaya Jeffrey, and the blistering guitar of Nick McLernon. It does not take long for the moshing and crowd surfing to pick up again. After “Bones,” Jordan and Nick once again lead the charge on “Hollowed Heart.” “Ether” starts slow and is a bit more melodic but is still heavy with some cool keys and plenty of unclean vocals. The new song “Epitaph” starts with some keyboards by Alex Reade and features her on the clean vocals as well as some of the harsh vocals. After “Soul Decay” and “Erase Me,” they close out their set with a fan favorite “Doomswitch.” Alex on keytar moves to the front of the stage and rocks out with the rest of the band. The crowd loves it and once again shows their appreciation by putting up their horns and cheering. Make Them Suffer keeps getting better with every album and tour, and it would not be surprising to see them headlining soon.

With the anticipation building, ERRA takes the stage to loud cheers and cranks the energy level back up.  JT Cavey delivers the harsh vocals and is backed by Andrew Cash on the clean vocals. They lead off with the title track “Cure” from their 2024 release of the same name. It starts out with a slower lead-in, and then the whole band joins in with JT’s punchy vocals, and Jesse Cash on the soaring clean vocals and lead guitar. “Gungrave” continues the onslaught and gets the crowd moving. Their set has five other songs from Cure including the next song “Crawl Backwards Out of Heaven,” along with songs from four of their other albums. The band also features the awesome musicianship of Clint Tustin on guitars, Alex Ballew on drums, and Conor Hesse on bass. Their set has great lighting in various colors that spin and move rapidly in thin beams, along with strobes, and smoke that add to the vibe of many songs.

After “Luminesce,” they play another new song, “Slow Sour Bleed,” which begins slowly with Jesse providing the lead vocals. It does not take long though for JT to join in with some heavy vocals along with thunderous drumming and bass. The 2019 single “Eye of God” features some wicked guitar work by Jesse and once again also features his softer and lucid vocals that soar at times. Jesse is the force that makes many of the ERRA songs stand out from the pack. “Scorpion Hymn” is one the heaviest songs with pummeling drums, chunky guitars, and some aggressive vocals. After “Glimpse,” they go all the way back to the 2011 album Impulse for the song “White Noise” which continues the sonic assault with rapid drumming and more of Jesse’s amazing guitar work. The new song “Blue Reverie” is mellow for a good portion of it with Jesse singing the leads, but still gets heavy when JT joins in later.

Picking up the pace again, they play yet another new song “Pale Iris” which has the fans putting up their horns, crowd surfing, and moshing, before playing “Dementia” from their 2013 album Augment. It is the longest song of the evening and features many tempo changes, softer passes, and more astounding guitar playing by Jesse. One of their most popular songs, “Snowblood,” opens with some quick beats and then takes off with great riffs by Jesse along with his soaring vocals in the chorus. It also features plenty of shredding by Jesse. The fans react by putting their fists and horns in the air and letting out immense cheers as the band exits the stage. Returning to the stage, they close it out with “Skyline,” which starts with some soft guitar and has a much slower pace, but still rocks as it ramps up with drums, JT’s forceful vocals, and Jesse’s lucid vocals, and killer riffs. What a great evening of metal by all four bands and at a cheap price. It is well worth the price of admission.
