BottleRock Festival 2023 Day Three at Napa Valley Expo in Napa Valley, CA

Day three of BottleRock closes out another successful weekend of fun, food, drink, and music with red-hot newcomers, and legendary headliners.

Day three of BottleRock started with The Alive on the Jam Cellars main stage, the teenage rock band from California. The summer festival circuit sees the young trio, made up of brothers Kai and Manoa Neukermans on drums and bass respectively, and Bastian Evans on guitar and vocals, playing a hard rock set that had the crowd bobbing their heads and happy to see that the hard rock torch is being carried forward by this young band. The band’s sound is a mix of rock and metal, and they put on a show that was musically impressive. The early 12:30 PM set carried a lot of buzz and was marked as not to be missed.

In the early afternoon, Half Alive took to the Verizon stage and brought their high-energy indie pop to BottleRock festival on Sunday. Frontman Josh Taylor’s infectious enthusiasm and dancing, and the band’s catchy melodies drew a large crowd. They played a mix of songs from their debut album, Now, Not Yet, as well as newer material from 2022 releases Conditions of a Punk and Give Me Your Shoulders, Pt. 1. The band’s performance was a reminder of why they are one of the most exciting new bands in indie pop, and why they will be opening for Twenty One Pilots this year.

With more energy than six Energizer bunnies, The 502s brought the heat to the Truly stage. The Florida-based band played, needless to say, a wild set that got the crowd moving. The band’s tight musicianship was always on full display, whether dancing, soloing, or just jumping around. The 502s all take turns at the mic singing lead and are all great musicians. The band’s main themes are fun and positivity which shines through, leaving the crowd at the Truly stage wowed and cheery, if not exhausted.

Also hitting the afternoon crowd with a big energy set on the Jam Cellars main stage was the always high-flying English rock n roll band, The Struts. The ever-flamboyant Luke Spiller exploded onto the stage to the appropriately titled “Primadonna Like Me.” The Struts’ charismatic frontman could be seen strutting across the stage and belting out vocals with passion. A frequent site on the American summer festival circuit and known for their over-the-top performances, the British band did not disappoint and set a high bar for the late-afternoon performers to follow.

The late afternoon Jam Cellars stage saw a much-anticipated appearance by the Ohio band, The National, who brought their signature brand of indie rock to BottleRock and the crowd was loving it. The band played a mix of old and new songs, including “Fake Empire,” “Bloodbuzz Ohio,” and “The System Only Dreams in Total Darkness.” Frontman Matt Berninger’s gravelly voice was in fine form, and the band’s twin brothers and guitarists Aaron and Bryce Dressner, and brothers Scott and Bryan Devendorf had the band locked in tight. The band churned through their set, leaving nothing on the table.

Sunday evening came to Napa and it was time for the two main headliners. First up was Lil’ Nas X. Lil Nas X brought his signature blend of costume changes, hip-hop, pop, and country to BottleRock, closing out the Verizon stage with a set heavy with dancers and color. It was a showpiece set that included his biggest hits, such as “Old Town Road,” “Montero (Call Me by Your Name),” and “Industry Baby.” The Grammy-winning rapper also performed a new song, “Late to the Party,” and “Panini.” His performance was a highlight of BottleRock 2023, and he proved once again that he is one of the most exciting performers in music today.

Closing out BottleRock 2023 on the Jam Cellars main stage was LA’s Red Hot Chili Peppers, stripped down and away from the massive and immersive psychedelic video stage currently used on their tour. The Chilis did what they do best, rock the funk out! Frontman Anthony Kiedis was in top form, running and bouncing all over the stage despite being in a walking boot for an unknown injury. His enthusiasm and charisma were infectious. Bassist Flea was also up to his usual wild antics, bobbing and running around the stage with Kiedis, his acrobatic playing and funky grooves keeping the crowd moving. Meanwhile, Chad Smith was the usual bombastic yet rock-steady anchor behind the drum kit. John Frusciante was masterful as always on the guitar, shredding and playing his signature grooves and riffs, moving the Peppers through an unforgettable set. Overall, it was a fantastic outing for the Chili Peppers, who proved that they are still one of the most exciting live bands in the world.

This was another successful year in Napa with too many bands and unforgettable musical experiences to mention here. Modern music lovers must make a pilgrimage at least once to experience this always awesome festival. Till next year BottleRock!
