Chicago fans had a night to remember as Bishop Briggs performed to the packed out crowd at the Metro, with a last minute change of opener.
Ellise had been scheduled to be the opener for this show but had to be replaced on short notice due to her having food poisoning. Luckily, Bishop Briggs‘ husband, Landon Jacobs, is currently touring with his wife, taking care of their child, and was able to step in to fill the gap. Formerly in the band Sir Sly, Jacobs is now pursuing a solo project, Sly Jr.
Jacobs ingratiated himself with the crowd by joking that his “Sugar Mama” (aka Bishop Briggs, or Sarah to him), took him to Chicago Music Exchange to buy him a guitar and some pedals so that he could step into the breach. This might have been an extremely short notice gig, but even though he said he gets extremely nervous before performing, he proved every bit the professional and captivated the crowd who had arrived early.
As the iconic Chicago venue filled with fans desperate to catch a glimpse of their favorite artist, Bishop Briggs took to the stage. Briggs released Tell My Therapist I’m Fine in October and the deluxe version came out just a few weeks ago. The fans who packed into the Metro were more than ready to hear the new music performed live. They didn’t have long to wait as she kicked off the set with “My Serotonin” and “I’m Not A Machine.” While a big portion of the setlist comprised of songs from the new album, Briggs explained that she knows people don’t only want to hear the new material when they go to a show, so she made sure to have some of her older songs mixed in there too.If you think she sounds amazing recorded, you have to go see her live! In person, her voice is a whole different level of impressive. Especially given the fact that she jumps and paces from one side of the stage to the other, all the while still hitting every powerful note. It’s incredible to experience that in person. The whole set was a masterclass in how to put on a show. She is every bit the performer. Amazing voice, non-stop energy, and interacting with the crowd in a very down-to-earth manner. This was not a phoned-in performance, she gave her all and left it on the stage.
When Landon said he was on the tour to look after their child so Bishop Briggs could “do what she was born to do,” he wasn’t wrong. If anyone was meant to be a performer, it was definitely her.
The evening was rounded out with a performance of “River,” which was every bit as energetic as the moment she stepped out onto the stage.
There are only a few dates left on this limited tour so do not sleep on it. This is one of those shows where even if you aren’t overly familiar with all of the songs, the atmosphere and performance will certainly draw you in.
