AFI’s The Bodies 2022 Tour came to Dallas after two reschedules and a two year delay. It was worth the wait for the almost capacity crowd.
The concert started with Drab Majesty taking the stage at 8 PM, the band fit in very well with being a very synth-heavy band that is considered a dark wave style of music. The band only has two members, both were wearing matching outfits so you couldn’t really tell who is who but they both shared singing duties. The band stayed behind a solid flush of red lights and smoke the whole set. They started with “Induction” and let it build before going seamlessly through a total of eight other songs which all blended cohesively, not knowing where one started and one ended.
AFI went on at 9.10 PM and from the get-go commanded the respect of the crowd. All of the band minus frontman Davey Havok came out and were all over the place on the intro bouncing from side to side and jumping off of things like it was lava. Frontman Davey Havok came in slowly from the left side with a microphone stand and held it to the crowd while screaming the lyrics to “Strength Through Wounding.” As soon as the last note hit, the lights went dark then they immediately went into “Girl’s Not Grey” which is arguably one of the first songs most people had heard from the band and got them into them. This was the Bodies 2022 Tour so this was the first run for the band since the newest album Bodies came out in 2021. They only played two songs from that album about midway through their set which were “Escape From Los Angeles” and “Death Of The Party.” “I am the death of the party” was written on the back of Davey’s jacket so it tied it all in together from clothing to songs.
The band’s energy was amazing. They were all in very fine form, especially Davey and guitarist Jade who literally leaned on each other throughout the show. At one point during “Miss Murder,” Davey Brought the house lights up as he stopped a fight by saying, “Sir, sir, please stop fighting and we will continue the concert.” Security then escorted said person out of the venue. The set was a short seventeen songs played in an hour and five minutes.
The band did an encore which they don’t always do. This time they played “The Leaving Song” and ended with fan favorite days “Days Of The Phoenix.” AFI played songs from nine of the band’s eleven studio albums, digging as far back as playing “He Who laughs Last…” from the 1996 album Very Proud Of Ya. To sum it all up, AFI put on an amazing show with tons of energy, and lots of the infamous Davey Havok “Ohs” that some people had been waiting for close to two years to hear, and they were not disappointed at all in it.
